Stintino was founded in the mid 1880’s, when the 45 families of "Isola Asinara" were forced to leave to make way for a quarantine area and subsequent penal colony. Nearby there are several beaches; the famous “La Pelosa” (which can get very busy in July and August) and “Le Saline”, “La Tonnara”, “La Pelosetta”, which although not as breathtaking, are ideal spot for a days sunbathing and swimming in the clear waters. Just north of La Pelosa is the Capo Falcone, were you can get wonderful views of the “Isola Asiniara”, “Isola Piana”, “Torre (coastal defence tower) della Saline” and “Torre delle Pelosa” and back down the coast towards Stintino.

The town has 2 ports, “Porto Minore” and “Porto Mannu”, at either end of the town. The coastal road between is lined with restaurants, bars and cafes. You can rent accommodation in the old town and in the newer adjacent tourist areas. From the port you can book sailing, windsurfing, diving and boat excursions. There is also a golf course located on the road from Sassari. Stintino has a long association with tuna fishing, and in the town you can visit The “Museum della Tonnara”. South of Stintino is the “Stagno Casaraccio”; a lagoon where you can see a variety of bird life.
