Porto Ferro , “Iron harbour”, is a splendid rocky coastline with crashing waves. From here you can see the three 17th century towers defending the bay (“Cala Viola”). There is a pleasant quiet beach area in the bay and if you fancy windsurfing this could be the place for you. Or perhaps just take in the views, if you suffer from vertigo don’t go too close to the edge! 3km away is Lago Baratz the only natural lake in Sardinia extending to c.60 hectares, located close to Alghero (Fertilia) airport. It is relaxing and calming location to take a walk through the pineta to the lake side and observe a diverse range of wildlife, you may see wild ducks and if very lucky fresh water turtles.
Argentiera is dominated by the 19th century wood and masonry mining buildings which were abandoned in the 1960s and give an eerie feel to the town. Silver (“argenta”) mining in this area was started by the Romans There are two beaches, “Cala dell’ Argentiera” and “Porto Palmas” with camp-site adjacent.
