The original church was donated to the Camaldolite Order who constructed the monastery which was consecrated in 1116. A splendid (some say the best in Sardinia) of Romanesque-Pisan architecture evidenced by the portico (entrance) and 40m bell tower. When the Camaldolite monks left it passed to a commendatory abbot and at the beginning of the 19th century the estate passed to the University of Sassari. Only ruins remain of the monastery; but the church was carefully restored at the end of the 19th century and the result is spectacular.
