Alghero is one of Sardinia's medieval towns, built by the Doria family in 1102, its original name “Alquerium” derived from “algae”seaweed. It was under Spanish rule for over 300 years and you will see the street names written in both Italian and Catalan. It is just ten minutes by car from Fertilia airport. Alghero promotes itself as an all year round resort and although the temperature drops in the winter it can still make a very pleasant break in northern Sardinia, Italy.
