Founded by the Phoenicians, under Spanish rule Bosa became a “royal city” and although its fortunes declined it has, since the mid 1990’s become a well regarded tourist destination. From the “Ponte Vecchio” you can see the historic 18th century tanneries “Sas Conzas” on the opposite bank to the main town. Near the bridge is the “Piazza Duomo” with the “Cattedrale del’Immacolata”. Further along Corso Vittorio Emanuele is “Piazza Constituzione” with cafes and bars. Just to the north then lies “Chiesa del Carmine” in a piazza of the same name.

The climb to the castle is steep so in the middle of summer you may prefer to drive and park nearer and save your legs for the final climb. The “Castello Malaspina” was built in 1112 by the family of the same name. The castle itself is semi-ruined but has great views onto Bosa from its walls and within lies the 14th century chapel the “Chiesa di Nostra Signora di Regnos Altos” with Catalan frescoes which were only discovered in the mid 70’s. Other areas at the time we visited were under restoration.

The town itself has a wide selection of restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance. On the first Sunday in August don’t miss the Festa di Santa Maria del Mare, which is a wonderful procession of fishing boats. Other beach areas can be found to the south at Porto Alabe and Marina di Magomadas. Just inland are Tinnura and adjoining Flussio, where many buildings have attractive murals.
