The province of Ogliastra (its name deriving from the ancient olive trees found here (see below). It combines rugged mountainous terrain with clean beaches with beautifully clear waters . The main towns are Baunei, Tortoĺ, Lanusei and Barisardo but as the least populated province in Italy. This area was originally populated by Nuraghic tribes (numerous nuraghe still remain) and has been subject to invasion by successfully Roman, Saracen, Pisan and Spanish rulers. South of the Spanish watchtower at Santa Maria Navarrese (built between 1785 and 1790) is a long pleasant beach and north is a small tourist pleasure port with various boat trips (mirroring many of those offered from Cala Gonone).

Just inland from the tower you will find the small church of the same name reputedly built by shipwrecked Basque sailors in 1052 and next to it an ancient olive tree. Inland are to be found nuraghic remains including the fortress of Doladorgiu and "tomb of the giants" of Santu Pedru e di Annida. The 8km beach of Barisardo is split by a rocky promontory on which is the 16th century Spanish defence tower. At Torre di Bari itself are some hotels and restaurants/bars in the surrounding area there are many hotels, agriturismo and private apartments for rent.
