Iglesias was founded in the 13th century linked to the re-opening of Roman mines (precious metals: silver and lead) by the Pisans. It is now a bustling but not over busy regional city. The “Piazza G.Oberdan” is the largest in the city and just off this square you can find the remains of the tower of the “Castello Salvaterra”(built 1248). On the way to the cathedral of Iglesias you pass through attractive historic streets and piazzas. The late 13th century “Santa Chiara” Duomo is itself in a classical square “Piazza Minicipio” which is also home to the “Palazzo Vescovile” (Bishops palace). The "Museo dell’Arte Mineraria” was originally a mining school and the displays reflect this heritage. In Siliqua (15km to the east) is the 12th century “Castello di Aquafredda” is a dramatic site perched on the top of a rocky outcrop.
